Advancing Capacity to Detect, Diagnose and Respond to Priority Fungal Diseases in the Ankole Sub-Region of South-Western Uganda
A fungal disease detection and response programme across 10 districts of the Ankole sub-region (Sheema, Buhweju, Mbarara and Mbarara City, Ntungamo, Kazo, Kiruhura, Isingiro, Rwampara, Rubirizi, and Bushenyi), led by Kabwohe Clinical Research Centre (KCRC) in consortium with Metropolitan International University (MIU) and Kampala International University (KIU), funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
MycoTrack helps clinic staff find people with advanced HIV disease who are eligible for fungal disease screening, track their diagnosis and treatment, manage antifungal medicine and testing kit supplies across sentinel sites, and lets any patient report new symptoms directly so the team can arrange a sample pickup.
The Diseases We Screen For
Cryptococcal meningitis
Cryptococcus neoformans
An estimated 5,553 cases a year in Uganda, responsible for a large share of all AIDS-related mortality worldwide. Reflexive screening is national policy for people with CD4 counts below 100 cells/microlitre or with viral load failure.
Candidiasis, including Candida auris
Candida species
A drug-resistant species of growing concern in health facilities, tracked here alongside routine Candida disease.
Aspergillosis
Aspergillus fumigatus and other Aspergillus species
About 3,600 invasive cases and about 26,800 chronic pulmonary cases each year in Uganda, often mistaken for tuberculosis that has failed to respond to treatment.
Histoplasmosis
Histoplasma capsulatum
A systemic fungal infection that can mimic tuberculosis or advanced HIV disease, under-recognised without dedicated testing.
Pneumocystis pneumonia
Pneumocystis jirovecii
About 6,700 cases a year across adults and children in Uganda, a leading cause of severe respiratory illness in people with advanced HIV disease.
